Instructions for Authors of Western Section Proceedings, ASAS

Manuscripts submitted as Western Section Proceedings papers should be typed directly on 8.5-inch x 11-inch paper using a two-column format and text in Times New Roman 10-point type (to enhance uniformity and appearance). All papers must be received as photo-ready. Also enclose a copy of the manuscript on a 3.5-inch disk in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect 6.1 or lower. The suggested length of manuscripts is four pages. Style and form should follow guidelines published in the Journal of Animal Science (Vol. 78, pp. 244-259, 2000). Use of incorrect style and form and excessive typographical and/or grammatical errors may result in rejection of manuscripts.

Margins: Left, right and bottom margins must be .75 inches; the top margin is .5 inches.

Page layout: The first line of the first page must have the following words centered on the page:

Proceedings, Western Section, American Society of Animal Science

Double space down and type the following (centered on the page):

Vol. 52, 2001

After one double space, the title of the manuscript should be centered on the page in bold, capital letters. After another double space, the name(s) (in bold type) and location(s) of the author(s) should be typed with the first letter of all words capitalized, except for prepositions and articles. Please use authors' initials, not full first names. After one double space, the two columns of the manuscript should begin. All subsequent pages should begin with the text .5 inches from the top.

Abstract: The left column of the first page should start with the word ABSTRACT (all capitals, bold type, flush against left margin), followed by a colon. The body of the abstract should begin two spaces after the colon. Up to five keywords should be included on a separate line at the end of the abstract.

Body of the Manuscript: Headings for the Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, and so on, should be centered on the column and typed (in bold type) with the first letter capitalized. Please refer to the Journal of Animal Science style and form for proper use of units of measurement, standard abbreviations, and all other aspects of style and form. Use bold type for the first use of a nonstandard abbreviation.

Columns: Columns of text should be of equal size, spaced .3 inches apart, and right and left justified.

Tables and Figures: Tables and figures may be incorporated into the column format of the text of the manuscript or included separately after the Literature Cited. All tables and figures must conform to the Journal of Animal Science style and form, with the margins set forth in this guide. Remember that titles of tables and figures should stand alone.

Footnotes: Footnotes should be placed at the bottom of the column under which they first appear.
