| Subject: | 2001 Western Section Meeting Announcement and Other News |
Greetings to all members of WSASAS. As the first order of business, I'd like to thank faculty, especially Dr. Jim Oltjen, staff, and students in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California - Davis for hosting the 2000 Western Section meeting last June. The venue was a great success. Once again, the WSASAS Symposium, entitled A Visions for U.S. Beef Production System@, was a highlight of the meeting.
The 2001 WSASAS meeting will be held at Montana State University in Bozeman on June 20-23, 2001. Dr. Pat Hatfield and faculty from the Animal and Range Sciences Department have planned an excellent program. The WSASAS symposium on industry and academic issues will be held on Wednesday, June 20. An optional tour of area production units is planned for Saturday, June 23.
The 2000 WSASAS awards were presented to G. Eric Bradford (Distinguished Service), Thomas R. Famula (Distinguished Teacher), Ronald L. Hathaway (Extension) and Timothy J. DelCurto (Young Scientist) and were sponsored by Roche Vitamin Inc., NRSP-8 Sheep Coordinator, Ft. Dodge Animal Health, and Cargill-Nutrena Feed, respectively. Colleagues are encouraged to nominate WSASAS members for one of these awards for 2001. Eligibility requirements are posted on the WSASAS web site [www.asas.org/westernsection]. Nomination packets should be sent by March 7, 2001 to:
Dr. James W. Oltjen

Committee assignments for 2000-2001 are also posted on the WSASAS web site. I appreciate the help of all of you who have agreed to serve on these committees.
Dr. Ronnie Green, past chairman of the Advisory & Coordinating Committee, conducted a survey of WSASAS on future publication of the Western Section proceedings. My interpretation of the survey is the following: the proceedings should be available electronically but at no extra cost, the paper copy should be available at the annual WSASAS meetings for a modest fee, and people would pay $15?25 for a CD copy of past proceedings. The Executive and Advisory & Coordinating Committees will give further consideration to these recommendations.
The 2002 WSASAS meeting will be held at Colorado State University, a joint ADSA/ASAS/WSASAS meeting will be held in Phoenix in 2003, and Oregon State University will host the WSASAS meeting in 2004. If your institution has not hosted the Western Section meeting in the recent past, please consider doing this and contact me with your interests. The WSASAS Executive Committee will help your institution in the planning stages.
We look forward to an excellent meeting at Montana State University. If you have questions or concerns about the Western Section, please do not hesitate to contact me or other members of the Executive Committee. See you in Bozeman!
