AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL SCIENCE

Summer Meeting 2004

Dear Colleagues,

The 2004 Annual Meeting of the Western Section, American Society of Animal Science (WSASAS) will be held June 16-18 on the campus of Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR.  We invite you to come to Oregon and participate in this excellent conference.  Highlights of the meeting are listed below.  Check out the Western Section Web Site for complete information (http://www.asas.org/western04/).

  1. A symposium will be held on June 16 entitled: Reproductive Management for Extensive Environments. Complete symposium details are on the web (http://www.asas.org/western04/).
  2. Oral presentations in the WSASAS Graduate Student Competition will be given on June 17.
  3. Presentations in the WSASAS Extension Symposium on June 17 will highlight innovative extension programs throughout the West.  Complete symposium details are on the web (http://www.asas.org/western04/).
  4. A graduate student forum at noon on June 17 will focus on career development.  Representatives of the animal industries, state agencies, biotechnology firms and educational institutions will participate on a panel to present and discuss the wide variety of career opportunities in Animal Science.
  5. Dr. Temple Grandin, 2003 Recipient of the WSASAS Distinguished Service Award will present her perspectives on issues and solutions facing animal agriculture today.  She will speak in conjunction with the annual business meeting on Friday, June 18th.
  6. A welcome reception will be held on the OSU campus on June 16.  On June 17, a barbecue/award ceremony takes place at the Oregon State University Alumni Center next door to the Conference Center. The meal will feature a traditional Northwest Salmon Barbeque. These events will be an enjoyable opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones.
  7. As always, there will be high quality oral and poster presentations in the disciplines of animal science.  Over 100 abstracts have been submitted.

  9. MAKE YOUR ROOM AND TRAVEL RESERVATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Excellent rates are offered on a space available basis in campus housing. A block of rooms have been reserved for WSASAS participants at the Hilton Garden Inn across the street from the conference center.   1. As usual, we thank the numerous sponsors who help make the WSASAS annual meeting a continued success.
  2. We are confident that this will be an outstanding conference and we look forward to seeing you in Corvallis this June.
  3. At the business meeting in Phoenix in June 2003, the attendees voted to approve 2 minor changes to the Western Section Constitution. The revised Constitution is posted at http://www.asas.org/westernsection/  These changes were:
    1.  Potential officer candidates can be voted on by the membership by mail and/or electronic ballot.
    2. Constitution changes can now be approved by a two-thirds majority of electronic ballots as well as by mail ballots and at the annual business meeting.
  4. Also at the business meeting in Phoenix, the attendees approved 2 minor changes to the Western Section Constitution to be voted on by the membership.  You may go to the web site to vote http://www.asas.org/western04/ (DEADLINE TO VOTE:  MAY 17, 2004) These changes were:
    1. The Western Section Applied Animal Science Award will be open to those papers published in the Western Section Proceedings.
    2. The term of office for the Chair of the Advisory and Coordinating Committee (appointed) will be for one year rather than three as in the past.
  5. At this time, you have the opportunity to vote for new officers of WSASAS and the new Western Section Director for the ASAS National Board. You may go to the web site to vote http://www.asas.org/western04/  (DEADLINE TO VOTE:  MAY 17, 2004)
