Be sure to mark your JAM social calendar with these ASAS events!

The Joint Annual Meeting is more than just posters and presentations, it’s also a time to network, catch-up with colleagues and have fun!

Here are the ASAS social events that are sure to be fantastic!

Sunday, July 15

Opening Reception: After the Opening Session, 8:15pm to 10:00pm at the Convention Center North 120A -D, there will be snacks, drinks and a mariachi band. This is the perfect time to meet up with people at the beginning of JAM.

Monday, July 16

Undergraduate Pizza Party (sponsored by ASAS Graduate Students): Free pizza anyone? The Undergraduate Pizza Party will be held from 12:30- 2:00pm in 229A Convention Center. Graduate students will be hosting the party and all undergraduates are invited to attend. It is sure to be a great time to interact and trade advice on schools, research and how to survive college.

Exhibitor Reception: Unwind after a busy first day with drinks and snacks in the exhibit hall. While there, take some time to peruse the exhibits to learn more about the latest products and services in our industries. The reception will take place from 4:00 to 6:00pm in the Convention Center Exhibit Hall A and B.

ASAS Awards Celebration: Following the ASAS Awards Program, there will a reception for all the ASAS award winners, at 8:30pm in the Sheraton Valley of the Sun room. Come and congratulate the winners, interact with other ASAS members and enjoy excellent food.

Undergraduate Academic Quadrathlon: What is better than a friendly competition between colleges?!? The AQ will be held in the Sheraton Hotel on Saturday, July 14 through Monday, July 16. Come out and support undergraduates from your school or from your alma mater. It’s also a great opportunity to see future animal scientists hard at work. The Finals are on Monday night, July 16, at 8:30pm, immediately following the ASAS awards dinner.

Graduate Student Mixer: This is a great opportunity to catch up with other graduate students and make new friends. The mixer will be held in the Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. 2nd Ave, at 9:00pm, and is sure to be quite the party!

Tuesday, July 17

ASAS Foundation Heritage Lunch: Meet some of the people who helped the beginning of ASAS. The Heritage Lunch will honor Lester Casida and Arthur Chapman and will be held in the Convention Center, room 229B from 12:30pm to 2:00pm. This is a great opportunity to mingle with those who have seen it all and learn from their experiences.

ASAS Graduate lunch and learn: Want to learn about how to market your research beyond the typical journal article? Look no further than the Graduate lunch and learn, where the topic is “Tailoring research to a specific audience.” The lunch will be held in the Convention Center, room 229A from 12:30 to 2:00pm. Be sure to register for this event because you wouldn’t want to miss this opportunity.

Animal Frontiers Birthday Celebration: How does birthday cake sound to you? Join ASAS as they celebrate the one-year anniversary of the launch of Animal Frontiers. The celebration will take place in room 231A in the convention center from 4:00 to 5:00pm. So come help blow out the birthday candle!

AnimalSmart Launch: Did someone say champagne toast? ASAS is launching an educational website, called AnimalSmart, and they are having a celebration. The launch will feature great food and a champagne. It will be held from 5:00 to 6:00pm in the Convention Center, room 222C.


2012 JAM Ice Cream Social: Enjoy ice cream while socializing with other JAM attendees. The social will be held in the Hyatt Regency from 8:15 to 9:30 pm

in the second floor atrium. It sure to have everyone screaming for ice cream!

President’s Reception: Join Margret Benson as she concludes her time as ASAS president at the President’s Reception. The event will be held in the Governor’s Suite, room 3141 in the Sheraton, from 9:00 to 10:00pm.

Wednesday, July 18

WSASAS Graduate Student lunch and learn: Ever wanted to travel around the globe? Well, this is your opportunity to learn more about international travel experiences and how best to prepare. Several graduate students will be speaking about their experiences, and you will have plenty of time to ask questions. The lunch will begin at 12:30 and go to 2:00pm in room 229A in the Convention Center.

Global Networking Reception: All good things must come to an end, and unfortunately JAM is no different. Everyone at JAM is invited to attend the closing reception, where they will have the opportunity to indicate their home affiliation on a world map. The event will take place in the Convention Center, room 224AB, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm.  The Yellow Tail Dancers will also be on hand to perform a blend of Native American song and dance.

Western Section Awards Dinner: Join members of the WSASAS as they honor their award winner. The dinner will take place at Alice Cooperstown, 101 E. Jackson, at 6:00 to 10:00pm.
