Smithfield update: Pork still under U.S. regulations

Shoppers don’t need to worry about bringing home the bacon.

Smithfield Food representatives say consumers will not notice a difference in pork quality, despite the company’s recent sale to China’s Shuanghui International. Even with the company under foreign control, Smithfield pork must still be raised and processed under U.S. food safety regulations.

The sale of Smithfield to Shuanghui International has been compared to the sale of Chicago-based Swift & Company to Brazil’s JBS. That sale did not compromise food safety because Swift & Company was still subject to U.S. regulations. Read the full article
