February 11, 2016 – Winners of the graduate and undergraduate student competitions held during the 2016 ASAS Southern Section Meeting were announced on February 8 during the Southern Section Awards Ceremony in San Antonio, Texas.
Here are the results of the competitions:
Graduate Student (oral) Competition– Ph.D.
1st place: Sierra Lockwood, University of Tennessee
2nd place: M.D. Redden, Oklahoma State University
3rd place: Elizabeth Backes, University of Arkansas
Graduate Student (oral) Competition– M.S.
1st place (tie) – C.L. Bayliff, Oklahoma State University, and N.M. Early, Texas A&M University
2nd place – H.C. Collins, Texas A&M University & Sam Houston State University
3rd place – J.C. Mackey, North Carolina State University
Undergraduate Student Competition
Ten undergraduates participated in this year’s competition!

At the Southern Section Annual Business Meeting, Southern Section Graduate Student Representative, Brittni Littlejohn, Texas A&M University, and outgoing Graduate Student Representative, Elizabeth Backes, University of Arkansas, gave a recap of student activities during the past year. They also introduced incoming representative, Sierra Lockwood, University of Tennessee.
The Southern Section Meeting also included a “Lunch and Learn” for graduate students, where students could network with peers and get tips from a panel of speakers on “branding” themselves.
