July 11, 2016 – Looking for more fun and interesting things to do at the 2016 Joint Annual Meeting (JAM) in Salt Lake City? Check out the special events offered for all ages!

Opening BBQ

In This is the Place, you can take a step back in time to see the West as it was in the early settlement of Utah. In addition to the fascinating historic surroundings to explore, we will have traditional BBQ games that all ages can delight in. As a special treat, you can enjoy our cowboy entertainers singing and performing trick roping, and even have a chance to try some ropin’ of your own! We will also have the Big Scoop ice cream competition along with the Battle of the Brats competition to see who is a true BBQ champ.

The BBQ will coincide with the launch of the JAM Instagram account instagram.com/2016jointannualmeeing/, hashtag #2016jam and a challenge to those attending the JAM Opening BBQ to post their cutest, silliest pictures using the hashtag #2016jambbq. The Instagrammer whose picture receives the most likes will win a gift bag containing great American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) items.

Student Events

There are a couple of great ways for students to connect with their animal science peers while at JAM.

Graduate Student Mixer. Meet new friends and catch up with old ones on Wednesday, July 20 at the Western Section/American Society of Animal Science (WSASAS/ASAS) Graduate Student Mixer, to be held at Twist bar and bistro in downtown Salt Lake City beginning at 8:00 pm.

Graduate Student Lunch and Learn. Be sure to register for the Graduate Student Lunch and Learn, hosted by WSASAS and ASAS from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 21. The theme of this Lunch and Learn is “Branding Yourself,” and will feature a panel of successful animal scientists discussing ways to distinguish yourself from the crowd in job interviews, curriculum vitae preparation, and the animal science field as a whole. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to attend this talk.

Family Events

Make sure to join us from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm on Thursday, July 21 for JAM Family Fun Day at Hogle Zoo. Discover wonders of the animal kingdom that kids of all ages can enjoy!

With 249 different species and over 800 animals, Hogle Zoo has an incredible diversity of life to see, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and spiders. Be sure to bring a swimming suit for the Splash Pad and check out the train and play areas as well!

Tickets are $35 for Adults (13+) and $30 for Children (12 and under). Space is limited so make sure to register your family today for this fun-filled day of exploration! Bus transportation to and from the hotel will be provided.

Spouse Events

Looking for something to do while your spouse is at the conference? Register for one of our JAM Spouse Events. We are offering events on both Wednesday, July 20 and Friday, July 22. Spouse Event I ($39) will be a bus tour of Olympic Park and Historic Park City. See the Olympic Village and site of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, then be transported back in time to the Old Wild West while visiting the Historic Main Street of Park City. Spouse Event II ($49) will head to Thanksgiving Point Ashton Gardens, containing fifteen themed gardens.

Both tours will depart from the hotel by bus at 9:30 am and return to the hotel at 4:30 pm.
