Dr. Monique Pairis-Garcia Receives the Outstanding Young Extension Specialist Award
Dr. Monique Pairis-Garcia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at Ohio State University with a 65% extension and 35% teaching appointment. Dr. Pairis-Garcia earned her DVM and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University. Dr. Pairis-Garcia teaches undergraduate animal welfare and behavior and co-instructs veterinary students on animal welfare. She serves on the Pig Welfare Committee for AASV and the National Pork Board, the NPB Swine Care Handbook Task Force, and the PAACO Common Swine Industry Audit Curriculum committee. Dr. Pairis-Garcia’s education and applied research interests include development and refinement of materials related to pain management, timely and appropriate euthanasia on farm, welfare audit and assessment programs to ensure positive animal welfare and handling on farm, and to provide expertise on current food animal welfare issues. She is an active member of AVMA, AASV, Midwest ASAS, and writes a monthly column for Pig Progress magazine.
Dr. Cassie Jones Receives the Outstanding Young Teacher Award
Dr. Cassie Jones is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Animal Sciences & Industry at Kansas State University. She earned her BS and MS from K-State and her PhD in swine nutrition from Iowa State University in 2012. During Dr. Jones’ coordination of the animal science undergraduate research program, it has grown from about 20 students annually conducting research to more than 130. In addition, she is an engaging instructor in the sophomore-level Fundamentals of Nutrition and graduate-level Monogastric Nutrition courses. Dr. Jones is a sought after academic advisor with more than 60 undergraduate advisees and serves as advisor for the Swine Club. Outside of teaching, Dr. Jones is an accomplished researcher with 42 peer-reviewed publications, more than 100 abstracts, and more than $6 million in awarded grants, gifts, and contracts. Dr. Jones and her husband, Spencer, raise Angus cattle near Wamego, KS and have three young children, Ty, Hayden, and Hadley.
Dr. Kristin Hales Receives the Outstanding Young Researcher Award
Kristin Hales was raised on a farm in the Texas panhandle. She received a B.S. and M.S. in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. in Animal Science from Texas Tech University. Dr. Hales has built a strong feedlot research program at U.S. MARC. In this role, she conducts research to improve feed efficiency of beef cattle by studying feed resources, feed additives, rumen microbiome and understanding mechanisms of energetic efficiency and energy partitioning through the use of respiration calorimetry. Dr. Hales and her colleagues have published 60 peer reviewed manuscripts and numerous abstracts and proceedings articles. Kristin and her husband, Chris live in Hastings.
Dr. Brandon Depenbusch Receives the Outstanding Early Career Agribusiness Award
For Brandon Depenbusch, a quest for knowledge and discovery mixed with practical application and field experience have proven a successful combination in both his academic and professional careers. Brandon earned a Bachelor’s of Science with a major in Animal Sciences and Industry, a Master’s of Science in Ruminant Nutrition, and completed a Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition in 2009 at Kansas State University. As he earned his degrees, Brandon gained valuable experience and training through work at the K-State Beef Cattle Research Center. Since the fall of 2009, Brandon has worked at Innovative Livestock Services, first as a research assistant and advancing to his current position of Vice President of Cattle Operations. In this role, Brandon provides guidance and leadership to the company’s feed yards in Kansas and Nebraska. He also continues to direct an intensive research program, participating in approximately 5 trials and/or projects annually, related to production efficiency, health management, biosecurity and traceability, and end-point management of carcasses. Brandon’s commitment to hard work and continuous improvement have had a positive impact at ILS and across the beef industry.
Alan Duttlinger Receives the Dr. Tim S. Stahly Outstanding Swine Nutrition Midwest Graduate Student Award
Alan Duttlinger is a Ph.D. student at Purdue University studying swine nutrition. His co-advisors are Dr. Brian Richert and Dr. Jay S. Johnson. Alan received his bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences from Purdue University and his master’s degree in Animal Sciences and Industry from Kansas State University. Alan’s interest in the swine industry started at a young age, as he was raised on a grain and swine farm in Northwest Indiana. Alan’s primary Ph.D. research focus has been on the development of safe and effective antibiotic alternatives for pigs following weaning and transport stressors. More specifically, Alan has investigated the effects of dietary L-glutamine on nursery pig growth performance and gut health. Upon Alan completing his Ph.D., his goal is to be better equipped to provide meaningful service and resources to swine producers and the global swine industry. Alan looks forward to returning to the swine industry as a nutritionist.
