Today’s tip on maximizing virtual meeting attendance

Today’s tip on maximizing virtual meeting attendance

We have all said it – “I am zoomed out!”. And we might believe that online meetings lack many of the benefits of in-person conferences: conversations over dinner; face-to-face networking; fresh perspectives that can come from simply being somewhere new. But over the last year, we have found there’s a lot to like about virtual conferencing, so over the next few issues of Taking Stock we are going to add some tips to hopefully help you make the most of the upcoming ASAS 2021 Midwest Virtual Meeting!

Today’s Tip: Relax! Virtual meetings are weird and its ok! We all want our virtual meetings to run perfectly – it probably isn’t going to happen. Be relaxed and be ready to be creative. At the 2020 ASAS Annual, we had one speaker lose internet/wifi connection during his invited talk, 5 minutes into his talk he just disappeared, 3 minutes of dead air, emails and instant messages to the staff and some panic in the office, and suddenly our speaker (or at this point, our hero) reappeared knocking on his neighbor’s door asking if he could steal his WiFi to finish his talk! We hope he knew his neighbor, but we were never sure! At ASAS, we are fairly confident in our ability to put on a robust virtual meeting and we are lucky enough to have members and attendees that will understand and even embrace the occasional loss of sound, technical glitches and a speaker that opted not to wear pants (and as an FYI, we think everyone wore pants at the 2020 ASAS Virtual Meeting)!
