When piglets are weaned, they often experience stress, diarrhea, and slower growth. To manage these challenges, antibiotics or zinc oxide are commonly used, but concerns about resistance and environmental impact have prompted interest in safer and natural alternatives. This study tested a plant-based supplement made from green tea extract, butyric acid, and vitamin K (called GBK) on young pigs. Results showed GBK improved growth performance and feed efficiency without causing diarrhea. Additionally, the supplement also reduced certain gut bacteria that produce bile salt hydrolase (BSH). High BSH activity is known to interfere with fat digestion and slow growth in pigs. Overall, the results suggest that this plant-based supplement is an effective natural alternative to antibiotics and zinc oxide for promoting healthy growth and gut function in weaned pigs.
