Introduction

Gastrointestinal (GI) permeability plays a central role in livestock health and productivity. The intestinal epithelial barrier regulates nutrient absorption, immune surveillance, and protection against pathogens. Stressors such as heat, weaning, dietary changes, and infections can compromise barrier integrity, leading to increased permeability, altered energy metabolism, and reduced performance (Lambert, 2009). In modern livestock production, the GI tract is often described as the “hidden engine” of animal performance. Yet, this engine is remarkably fragile and minor changes in homeostasis can have drastic impacts on metabolism, physiology, and ultimately animal performance. For instance, studies have shown that during heat waves, animals can lose up to 30% of their feed efficiency not only because of a lack of appetite, but also water loss and a compromised intestinal barrier (Gonzalez-Rivas et al., 2020). This phenomenon, colloquially referred to as “leaky gut” is increasingly recognized as a silent driver of reduced productivity and health challenges across species.
