Interpretive Summary: A systematic review of the efficacy of complementary colostrum, milk, and oral nutritional and dietary solutions on the health, growth, and gut health of suckling piglets

Pre-weaning mortality in piglets remains a major concern in modern pig production. This high mortality rate is partly a consequence of genetic selection for larger litters, which often exceeds the sow’s ability to produce enough colostrum and milk for all her offspring. To address this issue, researchers have explored various nutritional supplements designed to mimic the biological and immunological properties of colostrum and milk, as well as specific additives that support newborn piglets. These interventions aim to enhance piglet survival, growth, and gut health during the vulnerable suckling period. This review summarizes current knowledge on such dietary strategies as colostrum or milk derived from other species or artificial ones, as well as oral additive supplementation, and highlights their potential to improve piglet survivability, growth, and overall health. Among these options, milk replacers appear to be the most effective alternative when the sow’s colostrum or milk supply is insufficient. Nutritional supplements, such as arginine and certain probiotics can also promote piglet health. However, despite their benefits, adoption on commercial farms remains limited due to the additional labor, time, and management required. Therefore, further research is needed to develop more practical and efficient supplementation strategies.
