Interpretive Summary: Glycine ameliorates mitochondrial dysfunction caused by ABT-199 in porcine oocytes

A recent study published in the Journal of Animal Science induced a mitochondrial damage model in oocytes with the Bcl-2-specific antagonist ABT-199; the Chinese research team investigated whether glycine could reverse the mitochondrial dysfunction induced by ABT-199 exposure and whether it is related to calcium regulation. Previous studies conducted by the same research team have shown that glycine can regulate mitochondrial function and improve oocyte maturation in vitro, but the mechanisms by which glycine  affects mitochondrial function during oocyte maturation in vitro have not been fully investigated.

Results of the present study demonstrated that ABT-199 treatment causes mitochondrial dysfunction and induces oxidative stress and apoptosis in porcine oocytes. Treatment with glycine significantly ameliorates mitochondrial function and apoptosis, and glycine also regulated intracellular free calcium concentration levels and type 1 inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor cellular distribution. Overall, the results show the protective effects of glycine against defects in mitochondrial dysfunction induced by ABT-199 during porcine meiotic oocyte maturation.
