Swine Nutrition Heritage Fund - Travel Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial assistance for a graduate student focusing on swine nutrition to be used towards travel expenses to the 2025 ASAS Midwest or Annual Meeting.
This fund is intended to provide graduate students with the opportunity to gain valuable learning experiences, expand their professional network, and build lasting relationships with colleagues and friends in the field.
“We walked among giants,” Dean Boyd noted in reflection of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s (UNL) extraordinary nonruminant nutritionists' lineage that can be traced back to Drs. Ernie Peo, Murray Danielson, Austin Lewis, Bobby D. Moser, and so many more “giants.” This fund honors and celebrates UNL's extraordinary history while supporting current and future animal scientists.

A Members Animal Science Journey
"The joy and pride I feel for my children and graduate students are unparalleled. Nurturing their love for the outdoors, their care for animals, and their dedication to making the world a better place has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.” Steve Moeller, Ph.D.
I’ve always carried the spirit of a farm kid with me. Growing up on a diversified farm, I envisioned continuing the family farming tradition. My journey took an exciting turn when I discovered a deep passion for livestock production and genetics during my undergraduate studies at Iowa State University and as a student member of American Society of Animal Science (ASAS).
I received my B.S. in Agricultural Studies and Farm Operations, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics. At ISU, I also met my wife, Kim, who was equally passionate about animal science. Like many of us, our career paths shifted thanks to mentors who opened our eyes to the vast opportunities within animal science.
After completing graduate school, I embarked on a fulfilling journey as a faculty member at Ohio State University and our family grew with the arrival of our two wonderful daughters, Olivia and Grace.
Reflecting on my time at ISU, I deeply appreciate the remarkable guidance from Drs. Tom Baas and Lauren Christian.

During my tenure at Ohio State University, I was fortunate to build stronger connections within ASAS, which truly enriched my professional journey. In addition, the exceptional peer guidance of Drs. Keith Irvin, Henry Zerby, Francis Fluharty, and Steve Loerch propelled significant advancements in our research, extension, and teaching efforts.
My career has flourished thanks to the collaborative spirit and unwavering support from so many individuals. The ASAS Midwest Section has played a crucial role in my professional journey. The combined national and regional efforts unite the animal science community, creating an unparalleled environment for learning and contribution.
Now, our daughters have carried on the work to make this world a better place for animals and humans. Olivia is a game warden for the Department of Conservation in Michigan, and Grace works in the carbon and greenhouse gas emission space to improve the greenhouse gas footprint of livestock.

Kim and I are incredibly grateful for the remarkable journey we've had, filled with unexpected and rewarding moments. We invite you to take a moment to reflect on how ASAS has impacted your life, the doors it has opened, and the invaluable network of connections and friendships it has fostered. As we reflect on our journey, we recognize the importance of giving back. We invite you to join us in supporting the future leaders of animal science by contributing to the ASAS Foundation. Our support will ensure the continuation of this vibrant community and its impactful work.

ASAS is a Key to my Success Because...
“Involvement in ASAS started for me as an undergraduate student at Iowa State University while just beginning to be drawn into a career in research and industry. This engagement continued through my graduate studies at the University of Nebraska and remains strong today.
ASAS provides a foundational service to livestock production by creating and supporting the standards that promote and direct the quality of our work in animal science.
In addition, our journals and the excellent regional and national meetings we organize are essential platforms for developing young scientists. They provide a science-based source of knowledge in a wide range of animal production interests and facilitate critical interaction, collaboration, and the creation of new and novel concepts that drive our industry forward.
ASAS, our organization, has always been responsive to the changing world and changing industry. With our collective involvement, we can continue to build a productive and effective society that promotes our critical work in food production. I am committed to supporting ASAS's mission, and I invite you to join me in making a charitable contribution to the ASAS Foundation, supporting animal scientists through all stages of our careers.”
