Interpretive Summary: Science policy - solving “real-world problems” - ASAS PPC

A recent Nature career feature article (DePaul, 2024) focused on the roles of science policy advisors, noting “Many researchers think that science policy is a total snoozefest.” Four science policy specialists, from Spain, Canada, United States, and India, shared their insights for the article. These specialists described how their careers evolved from research to policy and their efforts to share scientific information and priorities with policymakers to help inform overall decision-making relevant for their countries and the world. The article is a quick, informative read and is consistent with the roles of the ASAS Public Policy Committee (PPC).

Since its formation in 2008, the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) Public Policy Committee has focused on ASAS engagement in public policy with particular emphasis on activities in Washington, DC. Today, the PPC continues these goals, helping to inform decision-making in areas of policy that affect animal science and agriculture, in keeping with the mission of ASAS. Among its activities, the committee provides articles for Taking Stock DC, with updates on emerging policy actions and reaction to current issues that affect animal science and research related topics, organizes a workshop for the annual meeting, responds to events or calls for letters of support, and contributes updates to the ASAS policy statements and grand challenges.

One key take away from the policy specialists comments in DePaul’s article emphasizes the importance of establishing relationships with policymakers in order to be considered a resource when questions from constituents arise, or proposed legislation or crises emerge. The PPC also hosts “Snack and Fact” sessions around animal science topics to help inform and build relationships with legislative staff.

Regardless of which administration takes over following this week’s election, issues affecting animal science and animal agriculture, including climate, the expired Farm Bill, water policies, the next Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and more are sure to continue to be important.  The PPC will be actively engaged over the coming year on behalf of ASAS members. Connect with the committee if you have interest or suggestions in animal science related policy.
