The performance and welfare benefits of providing shade in cattle feedlots have predominantly been investigated in higher-risk heat-stress zones. However, it is unclear whether the reported benefits of shade are relevant in cooler temperate zones. Results from this study indicate that there are definite welfare and modest growth benefits associated with providing cattle with shade in summer in a feedlot situated in a temperate climatic zone. Knowledge of the benefits of shade to animal welfare and performance in more climatic zones may facilitate further adoption of shade in the feedlot industry.
