The Executive Summary of the Scientific Report notes that the committee’s review found that current U.S. dietary intakes total protein foods, including meat, poultry, and eggs are generally at or above current recommendations. The committee presented findings to suggest increased consumption of beans, peas, and lentils, with reduction of starchy vegetables, meat, poultry, and eggs. In addition, the committee suggested reorganization of the category of Protein Foods Group: prioritizing beans, peas, and lentils first, followed by nuts, seeds, and soy products, then seafood, with meats, poultry and eggs last.
Members of ASAS and Taking Stock readers are encouraged to review the full report and participate in the public comment process.
