Interpretive Summary: A primer on sequencing and genotype imputation in cattle

Interpretive Summary: A primer on sequencing and genotype imputation in cattle

By: Troy N Rowan

The introduction of genomics into genetic prediction tools has led to a significant increase in selection accuracies across livestock populations. This innovation was enabled by the development of high-density genotyping arrays in the late 2000s. These tools have been used to generate millions of genotypes since. Recent developments in genome sequencing technologies present opportunities to drive down the cost of genotyping while increasing information. This paper reviews the development of genotyping arrays, genotype imputation, and genome sequencing. These concepts are then synthesized into a perspective on how low-coverage sequencing and imputation might become the predominant approach for genotyping in cattle populations. These innovations will require considerable adaptations to maximize the utility of these new types of data.
