Impact 2024 ~ Your Dollars Making a Difference
"Being the recipient of the 2024 H. Allen Tucker Graduate Travel Scholarship Award is a great honor. It shows that the research developed by our research team is on the right path to generating important data. This scholarship will be essential for participating in the 2024 ASAS Annual Meeting in Calgary, CA. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the ASAS Foundation H. Allen Tucker Appreciation Club." Vinicius de Souza Izquierdo | Ph.D. Student and Graduate Assistant | Range Cattle Center | University of Florida
Congratulations Vinicius de Souza Izquierdo!
Dr. H. Allen Tucker was a distinguished professor at Michigan State University for 38 years. He is renowned for scholarly contributions to the endocrine control of lactation, mammogenesis, and body growth in cattle. For Dr. Tucker, research was a venue in which to train students to use the scientific method and to think critically.

“As a passionate “mineral nerd” I am honored to receive the Gary L. Cromwell Award for Mineral Nutrition, a recognition made even more special by its association with the ASAS Foundation’s Gary L. Cromwell Appreciation Club. This award not only celebrates our shared dedication to advancing mineral nutrition but also inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of our field with passion and curiosity.” Stephanie Hansen, Ph.D. | Professor | Department of Animal Science | Iowa State University
Congratulations Dr. Stephanie Hansen!
Dr. Gary Cromwell is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Kentucky. His broad-based research has included assessing swine's amino acid and mineral requirements, the bioavailability of phosphorus in feedstuffs, copper as a growth promotant, the efficacy and safety of antibiotics, nutritional aspects of genetically modified crops, and environmental aspects associated with the use of phytase in swine diets.

T3 ~ It's more than the Thyroid Hormone - a message from Joel Caton, Ph.D. | ASAS President
“Stewardship is a balanced use of time, talent, and treasure to nurture long-term objectives related to our passions. As thyroid hormone (T3) is crucial for overall health, the same is true for aligning time, talent, and treasure, the T3 of stewardship, to ensure the prosperity of current and future endeavors.” - Joel Caton, Ph.D.
Growing up on a diversified grain and livestock farm in central Missouri instilled a deep love of agriculture, family, stewardship, and home. Being a 6th-generation Missourian from both sides of my family resulted in deep roots within those rolling mid-western hills and a love of the outdoors and rural life. My college and graduate school days in Missouri and New Mexico deepened my passion for science as a way to help farmers and ranchers thrive while efficiently producing high-quality foods for our country and the world.
During graduate school, I joined American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and began publishing in the Journal of Animal Science (JAS). Looking back, joining ASAS was a critical professional decision that shaped my professional and personal development. Over the years, ASAS has become my “Home Professional Society.” ASAS has been a constant support system throughout my career. It has provided scientific exchange and professional development opportunities for me personally, my students, and my colleagues over the years. Consequently, it is an honor and pleasure to give back to my profession through ASAS, my “Home Professional Society.”
When I think of giving to organizations that are important in my life several things come to mind. These thoughts are best encapsulated in the concept of stewardship. To me, stewardship represents the balanced use of time, talent, and treasure, applied across years, to foster long-term healthy goals associated with things that we care about. As an Animal Scientist, I remember time, talent, and treasure simply as T3, and I suspect some of my mentors would appreciate this. As you know, T3 stands for thyroid hormone, which is needed to maintain basal metabolic rate. If your T3 is out of balance, the body isn’t healthy, growth and performance won’t proceed appropriately, and whole herd efficiencies become compromised.
My wife Kristina and I consider stewardship an important value that underpins agriculture, family, faith, and home. As thyroid hormone (T3) is crucial for overall health, the same is true for the alignment of time, talent, and treasure, the T3 of stewardship, to ensure the prosperity of current and future endeavors. As Animal Scientists, we naturally give of our time and talent in efforts to make the world a better place; however, I urge you to consider giving portions of your treasure towards the future of the animal sciences by investing in the ASAS Foundation. Please take a few minutes and consider joining us with charitable contributions to foster ASAS, our “Home Professional Society.”

A Giving Partners Message - Ben Holland, Ph.D.
The connections developed through ASAS spark the revolutionary innovations of the future. From my first exposure as a graduate student 20 years ago and throughout my career, ASAS and its meetings and publications, have allowed me to connect with scientific heroes and develop friendships with colleagues that last long into the future.
ASAS has also been instrumental in keeping me abreast of the latest advancements in livestock production science. The future of livestock production demands a robust scientific workforce that can develop new hypotheses based on the foundations laid by previous generations. Supporting the ASAS Foundation is essential in nurturing this workforce pipeline and fostering valuable connections and lifelong friendships. By providing graduate student travel scholarships, symposia, reviews, advocacy, and other key initiatives, the ASAS Foundation is shaping this future.
Our support makes consequential differences in ASAS and its members. I encourage you to explore the various ASAS Foundation initiatives and consider supporting those that are meaningful to you. Our charitable contributions help current and future animal scientists benefit from the same enriching experiences that ASAS has offered us.
