Inspire · Ignite · Invest - Enriching Animal Science
Welcome to the 2025 ASAS Foundation Campaign Launch - Our opportunity to inspire, ignite and invest in our animal science community!
Inspire is our opportunity to unlock the potential in others and to open our hearts and minds to new possibilities. It is about sharing the joy and wisdom we cherish and using them as powerful tools to uplift and transform one another and our world. As we collaborate, we harness the wonders of research and innovation to create a brighter future, one where our collective efforts make a meaningful impact.
Ignite is the spark that fuels our inspiration, lights up our passion, and drives us to achieve greatness. It is the catalyst that encourages us to push boundaries and explore new horizons in animal science. Igniting this passion within ourselves and others creates a ripple effect, leading to innovative ideas and groundbreaking discoveries.
Invest in our animal science community. By investing in our community, we are not just contributing resources; we are supporting our fellow animal scientists through all stages of their careers. We are also nurturing the dreams and aspirations of future leaders. Our commitment today will empower young minds to dream bigger, think bolder, and lead with courage and compassion.
Inspire · Ignite · Invest - Meet Paisli Ivey - 2025 DC Animal Agriculture Policy Intern
"Being selected as the 2025 ASAS Animal Agriculture D.C. Policy Intern is a tremendous honor, as I have always been fascinated by the intersection of agriculture and policy. Being in our nation's capital, advocating for agriculture, and observing the legislative process firsthand will be an invaluable experience for me. I am eager to further contribute to agriculture and grow through this incredible opportunity." - Paisli Ivey | B.S. Animal Sciences | The Ohio State University
Paisli embarked on her exciting animal science journey as a high school student involved in FFA. During her time there, her love for promoting agriculture blossomed, especially after attending the inspiring Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) and taking part in the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA), where she enjoyed a fun mock government experience.
Paisli embraced her passion and inspiration during her time at Ohio State University. While there, she dove into the exciting world of animal research, taking on a research internship at the College of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences. She also launched her own research project with an equine model, which not only showcased her dedication but also earned her Research Distinction—an incredible recognition given to students who complete their own independent research project culminating in an undergraduate thesis!
In December 2024, Paisli proudly graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and started the next chapter in her life. Paisli has been accepted into the University of Georgia beginning in the fall of 2025 for a PhD in Regenerative Medicine. In this program, she will study stem cell repair using a swine stroke model. The upcoming D.C. Animal Agriculture Policy Internship is not just a stepping stone; it's a pivotal opportunity for Paisli. She is excited about the chance to dive deep into the policies that influence animal researchers nationwide, eager to gain firsthand experience of how these regulations develop and understand the dynamic relationships between regulatory agencies. This internship will not only broaden her perspective but also bring her one step closer to her ultimate goal of becoming a researcher in a USDA laboratory.
Congratulations, Paisli, on being selected as the 2025 ASAS Foundation DC Animal Agriculture Policy Intern!
The ASAS Foundation D.C. Animal Agriculture Internship is supported by the Jack H. Britt, Louis J. Boyd, Barb Glenn, Harold D. Hafs, and Robert G. Zimbelman Appreciation Clubs. To learn more how you can support this internship, through these Appreciation Clubs, visit online here.

A Members ASAS Journey "A little more 'moo' than math"
In 1956, although I was enrolled and set to become a civil engineer, my experience growing up on a family tobacco and cattle farm in Maryland instilled a deep appreciation for agriculture. So, I dropped out of engineering school, worked as an inspector of highway construction in DC for two years, and received an offer from an elderly cousin to develop a 1200-acre cattle ranch in Alabama. It turned out that my true calling was more "moo" than math.
Though my parents weren't farmers, other family members were. My maternal grandfather, born in 1842, was a remarkable dairy farmer in Maryland. My mom, with her high school education, and my dad, who pursued a career in law, taught me the importance of following one's passion and the courage to forge one's own path.
My cousin's offer to develop the cattle ranch and my passion for animal agriculture allowed me to be admitted to Auburn University in 1959 and pursue a degree in animal science. During those years, I was fortunate to receive guidance, mentorship, and education from a group of extraordinary professors, including Drs. Earl Wiggins, Bill Warren, Troy Patterson, and Howard Tucker.
(Left to Right: Bill Warren, Ph.D., Troy Patterson, Ph.D., L.E. Casida, Ph.D., Ed Hauser, Ph.D.)
A stroke of fortune came when the esteemed Dr. L.E. Casida had a rare opening for a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW). This golden opportunity allowed me to enter a graduate program under the guidance of Drs. Casida and Ed Hauser and earned my MS in 1964 and my Ph.D. in 1968 in endocrinology and reproductive physiology. This path was not just about academic achievement; it was a testament to the power of following one's passion and “walking through” the doors that are opened for you.
In 1964 I attended my third ASAS meeting in Chicago. I was a bundle of nerves as I prepared to present my first paper, endocrinology and physiology of postpartum sows. Looking back, I chuckle at how I must have been Dr. Casida’s most challenging grad student, taking a full five years to wrap up my Ph.D., but he never gave up on me! Although it’s been a while since I last attended an ASAS meeting, I still cherish those experiences.
In 1967, I embarked on my career with The Upjohn Company Animal Health business, a journey that would see the company evolve through mergers and name changes. I retired from there in 1998 but returned the next day as a contractor to work for an additional eight years. I formed a consulting company in 1999 and continued to actively work in the animal industry until 2017.
(Jim and Linda, 2005 ASAS Meeting)
My first wife, Ann, and I were blessed with three wonderful children: Jim, Maggie, and Martha, with each finding their own career success. Jim is a Department Chair (Cell Biology) at U. GA and internationally known for his research; Maggie, a professional thoroughbred jockey, followed her passion to pursue a degree in animal science from Michigan State University (MSU) under the mentorship of Dr. Roy Fogwell, and has a thriving dog breeding business, Lauderdoodles, and is successful in training thoroughbred race horses; Martha found that dressage was the best means of stress removal during her career of leadership in lean management in the auto, asphalt shingle, and health businesses.
Then, in 1998, I married Linda, and we shared a beautiful life together until her passing in 2020. Linda was my steadfast companion at every ASAS meeting, and she absolutely loved the camaraderie of the "ASAS wives club." Together, we forged countless cherished friendships with many wonderful couples, each one adding a special chapter to our shared story.

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I am truly amazed at the moments I underestimated or overlooked, realizing how deeply ASAS was woven into every step of the way. For me, what began as a student seeking a platform to share papers, to opportunities to connect with fellow researchers, and to maintain the pipeline of future animal scientists for my company turned into connections that have transcended professional boundaries, becoming a group of lifelong friends.
The 2025 ASAS Foundation campaign slogan, “Inspire · Ignite · Invest,” truly resonates with me. It captures the essence of what we strive for in our animal science journey. No matter where you are on this path, I believe we all have the power to inspire, ignite, and invest in our professional community, helping our animal science family grow and flourish. Join me in supporting a cause through the ASAS Foundation that speaks to your heart, whether it’s student scholarships, internships, prestigious awards, distinguished lectures, or any of the other critical initiatives.
Thank you for joining me on this journey!
