Andrea Osorio was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. From a young age she knew she would pursue a career in agriculture. She received her BS in Agronomy from Escuela Agricola Panamericana Zamorano. During her senior year of college, she took an animal production course, which awoke her passion towards animal science. After receiving her BS, she worked as a research intern in: 1) the University of Sao Paulo, Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) concentrated on dairy calves and genetic improvement of hens; and 2) Kansas State University in feedlot beef cattle nutrition. Then she began her MS focused on sustainable beef cattle nutrition under Dr. Darren D. Henry, at Texas Tech University. During her MS, she investigated the effects of encapsulated calcium-ammonium nitrate on performance and greenhouse gas emissions from grazing beef steers. Her program is focused on improving beef cattle production through reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, she is a first-year PhD student under Dr. Darren D. Henry at Texas Tech University, where she earned the Distinguished Graduate Student Assistantship (DGSA). Her PhD work will evaluate the use of tannins/saponins in beef cattle production at a systematic level, measuring performance, methane production, and ruminal metabolism of steers from the stocker phase, through finishing and post-harvest.
